specialist training for international organisations

Foundation Course for Safeguarding Focal Points

This is online course covers: awareness, prevention, reporting, and responding to abuse, equipping professionals to operate as a Safeguarding Focal Point (SFP) in the humanitarian and development sectors. Courses are available in Arabic, English, French and Spanish.

Participants will learn how to map the contexts in which they are working, understand the role of a SFP and recognise harm. Building on this knowledge participants will learn how prevention mechanisms operate and how to work with partners.

Having developed their understanding, participants will go on to learn how to establish and operate reporting mechanisms, respond to safeguarding concerns and how barriers prevent reporting.   The course covers person centred approaches, addressing immediate needs and investigations to international standards.

The core competencies of this course include:

  • Understanding the principles of safeguarding and the related international standards (person-centred approach, confidentiality, accountability to affected populations)
  • Knowledge of accessing survivor assistance mechanisms (referral pathways protocols and expectations)
  • Coordinating with in-country safeguarding counterparts (PSEA networks, inter-agency roles and responsibilities)
  • Applying good practice in the management of safeguarding mechanisms (receiving complaints, community-based feedback mechanisms, safeguarding assessment)
  • Communicating safeguarding messages effectively to staff and beneficiaries (awareness-raising methods and tools)

Our trainers are experienced safeguarding professionals, who have coached and developed safeguarding and non-safeguarding colleagues in multiple countries and contexts.

Participants should be aware that the course content may involve discussing accounts of sexual abuse and will need to be familiar with Microsoft Teams. A short pre-course exercise in context mapping will support participants to effectively engage with the course.

A certificate will be provided to successful participants, who should have a basic understanding of safeguarding prior to attending.   Participants will also receive complimentary online access to Safeguarding Insights 2025 our one-day conference (London time, in English).

Participants who need to refresh or develop their safeguarding knowledge prior to the course could undertake Safeguarding Essential, a short course or preferably Safeguarding in the International Aid Sector with the Open University. Both courses are free to access.

This course uses the foundations of a programme developed through a multi-agency approach by InterAction, the International Medical Corps and Concern Worldwide.

Each course will be split over several days and modules.
